Mohair has a winter reputation it doesn’t deserve. The fibre breathes well and wicks moisture, which is why classic tropical-weight suiting has always been a wool-mohair blend. Here’s how to wear it when it’s 30°C in Pretoria.
- Look for open weaves. A loose, airy knit or a crisp wool-mohair suiting cloth wears cool. Dense, fluffy brushed mohair is for June.
- Go for the sheen. Mohair’s lustre is its signature. A tailored trouser or a boxy jacket in a mohair blend reads polished without any embellishment.
- Colour is the point. Mohair takes dye brilliantly. Try a single saturated piece — a cobalt cardigan, a coral shell top — against neutral linen.
- Mind the itch. Kid mohair, from the first shearings, is the softest. If a garment scratches, it’s likely older-goat fibre; layer it over cotton.
- Fit for every body. Mohair drapes rather than clings, which makes it generous on fuller figures. A relaxed, longline knit works across sizes.
- Care for it once, keep it for decades. Hand-wash cold, dry flat, never hang a knit. Treated well, a good mohair piece outlives most of your wardrobe.
