About

ESONILE

African stories. Global perspective.

Africa has always been a source. Of fibre and colour, of craft and form, of ideas the rest of the world has worn, sat on, eaten, collected and called its own. Too often, the story stops at the source.

ESONILE exists to tell the whole story.

We are an independent, African-led publication about fashion, design, culture, beauty, agriculture and the business of creativity. We follow things to where they begin and to where they end up: the goat in the Karoo and the suit on Savile Row, the clay and the gallery, the recipe and the restaurant, the founder and the brand she is building.

What we believe

That Africa is not a trend, a palette or a mood board. It is a continent of makers, thinkers and industries that shape global taste, often without credit. That excellence deserves to be documented with the same seriousness, beauty and rigour as anywhere in the world. And that pride and honest questions belong on the same page.

What we cover

  • Thread Fashion, designers and the craft behind them.
  • Skin & Ritual Beauty, grooming and the traditions that shape them.
  • Soil Agriculture, the source of everything we wear, eat and make.
  • Space Design, architecture and interiors.
  • The Culture Music, art, film and the ideas shaping the continent now.
  • The Business of It Founders, money and how African creative brands grow.
  • Living Travel, food and the way we live now.

Who we write for

For African readers, ESONILE is a place to discover extraordinary things about your own continent: the industries, artisans and ideas you were never taught about. For readers everywhere else, it is a richer, truer view of Africa than the one you were given.

How we work

We report carefully. We check our facts, credit our sources and never invent a quote. When a story involves criticism, the people concerned get the chance to respond. When we don’t know something yet, we say so.

Beyond the page

ESONILE is also a community. The Edit brings the best of the week to your inbox every Friday. The Table gathers readers, makers and thinkers around long lunches and dinners. ESONILE Makers helps African founders who make their own products get seen and grow. And The Shop will bring together pieces from the designers we write about.

From the founder

ESONILE was founded by Ndumi Mahlangu, who has worked in fashion since 2012. It began with a simple frustration: watching the world fall in love with African craft while Africa owned so little of the value it created. This magazine is her answer.
